RESEARCH
The 2024 General Election Report, developed in partnership with ICT News, offers a comprehensive look at Native representation in the 2024 election. At publication, we verified 253 Native candidates across 25 states, representing 113 Tribal Nations — the highest since Advance and ICT News began tracking.
Many leaders broke new ground, becoming the first Native candidates to run in their districts and opening doors for others to follow. With each election cycle, more Native leaders are stepping forward to run for office — bringing us closer to a future where representation reflects reality.
From local to federal races, Native leaders are redefining what it means to serve our people—protecting our sovereignty, our lands, and our rights for generations to come.
Key Findings
These findings are more than milestones, they are signals of the future ahead as pathways, support, and visibility continue to expand.
The number of Native candidates increased by 55% from 2022 to 2024. Of those who ran, 55% were incumbents—an impressive 92% of whom were re-elected. Just as powerfully, 36 non-incumbents won their races, expanding representation in many districts where Native candidates had never been on the ballot before.

The 2024 cohort of Native candidates embodied the beautiful diversity of Indian Country. A majority of candidates were women, and 7% identified as LGBTQ+. And, an impressive 17% of Advance’s endorsed candidates identified as LGBTQ+, including four who are Two Spirit, non-binary, or gender non-conforming.

Election outcomes
When Native leaders run, they win. In 2024, Native candidates achieved an impressive 65% win rate — momentum that should inspire and encourage every Native person considering a run for office.
